How does ear nerve stimulation device work?

The device uses transcutaneous autonomic neuromodulation. A handheld device by Afferent Medical Solutions uses two small clips positioned on the tragus flap cartilage in front of the ear canal to deliver mild electrical signals to autonomic nerves controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Patients can use it at home without clinic visits or surgery.

What did SCRATCH-HTN trial find?

The SCRATCH-HTN trial enrolled 63 people with uncontrolled hypertension already taking at least one medication. Treatment was safe, generally comfortable and practical for home use, but researchers found no statistically significant difference between active stimulation and sham device across the entire population.

Why were results promising in severe hypertension?

A prespecified subgroup analysis showed greater blood pressure reduction among participants with more severe hypertension who received active stimulation, suggesting the technique may work better for difficult-to-control blood pressure, requiring confirmation in larger studies.

Is the device safe and practical for home use?

Researchers reported treatment was safe and generally comfortable, with participants following the prescribed schedule of 30 minutes daily for two weeks then once per week, suggesting practical regular home use.

When will it be widely available?

Findings represent an early step rather than proof of an effective treatment. Larger clinical trials are essential to confirm effectiveness before it provides a cheap, scalable solution for millions with hypertension.
